 skin facts

Your face is the first thing yourself and others see. It’s what you present to the world as ‘you’, so it’s worth looking after!

Our skin is our largest body organ (yes it is an organ) which keep all of our insides in, Skin acts as a waterproof, insulating shield, guarding the body against extremes of temperature, damaging sunlight, and harmful chemicals and makes up 15% of our total body weight. The total surface of our skin adds up to between 1.5 – 2 metres.

  • Skin cancer is the most common of cancers among both men and women, accounting for more then 30% of all cancers combined.
  • Sun damage is thought to be responsible for 80% of skin ageing. That’s why the skin on our hands, face and neck (more frequently exposed areas to the sun) seem to age faster than on other areas such as the stomach. Without sun damage, we would probably not develop wrinkles until we were in our 80s.
  • The sun damages important proteins in our skin like elastin and collagen, which gives skin bounce and resilience. Collagen supports the skin’s tiny blood vessels. By weakening collagen through sun damage, blood vessels bleed more easily and may show up as broken thread veins (this is commonly seen on the face, often around the nose and the cheeks). So wearing sunscreen every day is very important!
  • Every 24 hours, the skin sheds a layer of dead cells, which are constantly renewing themselves around every 28 days. An average of 40 kg of skin is shed during a lifetime, and dead skin cells make up about 90% of household dust.
  • Skin is thickest on the palms and soles at up to 4 mm thick, and thinnest on the lips and around the eyes at just a fraction of a millimetre thick.
  • Smoking adds years to the skin, as the chemicals in cigarettes starve the skin’s cells of oxygen along with reducing its elasticity and having a ‘deadening/ dulling’ effect on the complexion.
  • Smoking also causes deep lines around the mouth area due to the stress of ‘puckering’ to drag and inhale whilst smoking. Crow’s feet around the eyes also become evident due to squinting to keep smoke out of one’s eyes.
  • Drinking plenty of water for hydration plays a very important role in maintaining a good complexion both in appearance and condition. This is because water plays an essential role in maintaining skin elasticity and suppleness. Drinking approximately two litres of water a day is recommended (individual amounts may vary based on the activity levels of individuals).
  • Your skin secretes up to 6 pounds of toxins every night while you're sleeping!  That puts a new meaning to cleansing in the morning does'nt it!
